Dziorny, M. (2006) The Sims Go to College. Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education, Orlando, FL.

The debate over using video games to teach and learn is growing as more educators look for better and more motivating ways to teach their students. Many students are no longer content to learn for learning’s sake. They want learning to be fun and engaging. To that end, Digital Game Based (DGL) learning could prove to be a valuable asset in the educator’s toolbox. This paper begins by discussing DGL including providing a working definition. Advantages and disadvantages of DGL are also presented. The paper concludes by discussing the use of commercially available games to teach various concepts in the classroom.

Dziorny, M. (2006) Accommodating Learning Disabilities in Online Classes. Preconference Workshop for Innovations in Online Learning, Austin, TX

Though much has been written about accommodating physical disabilities in online courses, instructors are often left struggling to accommodate learning disabilities (LD), especially in online courses.  Accommodations typically include extended time on tests or modified tests.  They can also include modified assignments.  Many instructors are unaware of how to efficiently make these accommodations, especially when teaching in a Course Management System.  Course Management Systems, like BlackBoard and WebCT, have several features that can be used to ensure that LD students’ accommodations are met with minimal effort on the part of the instructor and/or course designer.  This workshop will present common accommodations requested by students with LD along with practical suggestions for how to adjust courses to meet them.  Features such as selective release and group management will be discussed and demonstrated.  Participants will be encouraged to brainstorm and discuss other potential solutions to accommodation LD in their online classes.

Dziorny, M. & Wadlow, S. (2006) WebCT vs. Blackboard: Which Do Staff Prefer for Online Training?. WebCT Texas, College Station, TX.

The University of Texas at Dallas is developing online staff training courses and is faced with the dilemma of choosing an LMS to deliver the courses. UTD has both WebCT Campus Edition and Blackboard Basic already installed on campus. To help us decide which platform to use, we conducted a comparison study between the two platforms to gather staff and faculty opinions and preferences. Come hear what we learned!

Dziorny, M. (2007) DGL and Dyslexia. Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education, San Antonio, TX.

Digital Game-based Learning (DGL) has become a hot topic in educational technology in recent years. Additionally, effective instruction for students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities is a growing concern in higher education. This paper begins with an overview and working definition of dyslexia, followed by a discussion of the most common difficulties dyslexic students experience in higher education. Common instruction techniques used with dyslexic students are presented. Advantages and disadvantages of using DGL are discussed. Finally, arguments are presented for using DGL as an instruction method with dyslexic students in higher education.
